This is my entry for contest "Elflings" of the group #Elves-of-TolkienPrayerGlorfindel is a generous man, or so those who know him say. Everyone knows that despite his faults, he is a good man, whose heart is not given to jealousy.
That is what his lovers say, and that is what Glorfindel likes to believe. The truth looks different.
He hides behind smiles when Idril and Tuor are blessed with a child, yet his heart aches with pain whenever he looks at them. Almost he can understand Maeglin when at last, they are betrayed.
He, too, has come to know what it means to pray for something that can never be.
This is a drabble I wrote for Back to Middle-earth Month 2011, and which perhaps expresses best the desire for a child the Glorfindel in my 'verse has always felt.
He had to die and be reborn and return to Middle-earth before that wish would come true, but now he thinks he knows what true joy is at last.
